Owl Eyes plays the role of the perceptive outsider in The Great Gatsby. Nick meets Owl Eyes at one of Gatsby’s grand parties. While the other guests trade wild rumors about their host, Owl Eyes cleverly examines details of Gatsby’s home, such as his books, which reveal the depth of Gatsby’s desire to appear impressive and authentic to others. At the end of the novel, Owl Eyes is the only partygoer other than Nick to attend Gatsby’s funeral. Owl Eyes is seemingly the only character other than Nick to see through Gatsby’s facade to understand his true, if flawed, humanity.
